====== Johnston, Wilfred James ====== (1911- 8 March 1992), dental surgeon. Born in Montreal. He attended Elizabeth Ballantyne School in Montreal West, Bishop’s College School of Lennoxville, Que., and McGill, with degree of D.D.S. from McGill in 1938. He was a dental officer with the First Canadian Survey Regiment in World War II, serving in England and Italy (including Sicily). In 1945, he returned to private practice. He was involved in developing techniques for restoring the features of war-injured veterans, techniques which were later used to assist cancer patients. He took part in creating the Department of Plastic Reconstruction at the Queen Mary Veterans Hospital in Montreal to develop surgical, facial and bodily prostheses for rehabilitation of wounded veterans. This department was transferred to McGill in 1968. Dr Johnston had a long association with McGill as a teacher. He was a demonstrator in several subjects, from 1939; lecturer in dentistry, 1946-1947; assistant professor of dentistry, 1948-1956; associate professor of dentistry, 1957-1965; professor of dentistry, 1966; emeritus professor of dentistry, 1973, and was chairman of the Dept. of Endodontics, Pharmacology and Oral Therapeutics at McGill. In 1970 he was elected to the McGill Senate. He was director of dental services at the Montreal Children’s Hospital and a member of the cleft palate team at the same hospital. Also, he was on the staff of the Montreal General Hospital. He was married to Joan Francis. (three children) He and his wife retired to GC, where they operated a full-time farm (Holmwood Farms, of R.R. 1, Martintown). They were involved in many local activities and organizations, including the Glengarry Historical Society, and especially the Nor’Westers & Loyalist Museum in Williamstown. They were concerned with and deeply interested in heritage issues and heritage preservation measures. Dr Johnston was named to the Order of Canada in 1975, at the same time as J. Russell Harper. Dr Johnston died at the Chateau Gardens Nursing Home, at Lancaster, GC.
