Frances (Chisholm) Olsen
I have very few memories of my time at Central office of the Glengarry Telephone Co. and will try to summarize those memories as concisely as possible.
- I think we worked 8 A.M. until 8 P.M.
- we worked one week on and one week off - I have no memory of what we were paid
- the work itself was easy and the living conditions were great (Janet was a great cook!)
I probably remember this bit because it pertained to our home line - line 19 - trying and trying to get through to someone on that line for a customer from Dalkeith. The line was busy and busy again and again because Mrs. Dan Baker (MacDonald) was talking (and talking!). I’m sure there were quite a few like Mrs. Dan Baker - house bound during the winter - and those telephone conversations gave them contact with friends and neighbours and possibly helped maintain sanity (!?).
I have only fond memories of John Joseph. My family and I only knew his kindness and the genuine pleasure he showed when meeting one of us when we came home for a visit (and he always knew the right name for the right girl - a big plus!)
