He studied at Westminster College, of New Wilmington, Penn., and the Reformed Presbyterian Seminary, of Allegheny (now a part of Pittsburgh) and served as a pastor in Nebraska. While a student, he had supported himself by combining his academic work with schoolteaching. From Oct. 1887 to 1897 he was pastor of the tiny Covenanter (Reformed Presbyterian) Church at Brodie, in GC, being the first resident pastor there. After returning to the United States, he seems to have given up regular pastoral work, but was a lecturer and supply clergyman. In 1878 he was married to Sara Elizabeth Lytle, also of Penn. He died at his home in Grove City, Penn.
