Parents: Alexander Matheson (d. 28 Oct. 1885, aged 64) and his wife Flora Nicolson (d. 29 Oct. 1904, aged 84). This couple, who came to Canada sometime before 1856, had a farm in GC on the North one-half of Lot 19 in the 9th Concession of Kenyon Township. In 1868 Alexander received from the Crown the patent for this half-lot. John, his son, the subject of the present article, attended Alexandria High School, and was a teacher before becoming a clergyman. John graduated from McGill in 1876 and from the Montreal Theological College in 1879, and was ordained as a Presbyterian clergyman. His gravestone states that he was a “Minister in Glengarry for 38 Years.” He was pastor from 1879 to 1897 in the combined charge of Burns Church, Martintown, and Hephzibah Church, Williamstown, briefly in Hephzibah Church alone, at Summerstown from 1898 to 1913, and at Dalhousie Mills (the Round Church) from 1913 till his death. He died in the General Hospital, Montreal. (children surviving him: 7) He was buried at the cemetery of the Round Church, Dalhousie Mills, GC. He was married on 5 April 1887 to Christy Ann Elizabeth MacNaughton (12 March 1866-20 Aug. 1940) of Charlottenburgh, a descendant of Peter Ferguson. Two of their sons, Homer Lindsay Matheson (d. 16 Aug. 1916) and John Renwick Matheson (d. 16 April 1918) were killed in the First World War, the one before and the other after their father’s death.
