====== Bowie, Douglas M. ====== (//fl//. 1930 & 40s), businessman. (Col. Douglas Bowie) He was involved in the building of the Glengarry and Stormont Railway (see [[hervey_chilion_longley|Gen. Hervey]]). He bought in 1933 the Thornhill property at Lancaster, GC (//Glengarry News// 2 June 1933). In 1945, he sought to become the Conservative candidate for the GC constituency at the forthcoming Ontario general election, but the candidature went instead to Osie Villeneuve. (//GN// 4 May 1945) In later life, apparently under financial difficulties, Bowie and his wife appear to have left Thornhill and to have lived in a house on Highway 2. Bowie could speak French. He once told a French-Canadian friend, “You are three things: French, Roman Catholic, and Canadian: hang onto all three of those.” For Thornhill, see also [[mcbean_alexander_george|A. G. McBean]]. ---- Private information * Ross, //Lancaster//, 399 [<6>]
