====== Ethier, Joseph Albert Elzear ====== (1884-Aug. 1956), entrepreneur, sawmill proprietor. (A. E. Ethier) Born at Ste-Justine-de-Newton, Que. In 1922 his log drive on the River de Grasse (i.e., the Rigaud River) was reported to be, at some 18,000 logs, the largest in many years. (//Glengarry News// 14 April 1922) On 15 July 1924 his sawmill at Dalkeith was destroyed by fire with a large loss of sawed lumber. (//GN// 18 July 1924) However, the sawmill was quickly rebuilt. In the spring of 1925 he began a drive of logs from Lochinvar to Dalkeith on the River de Grasse. He expected at this time to bring 10,000 logs by water to his sawmill at Dalkeith. (//GN// 3 April 1925) Ewan Ross thought this to be the last recorded log drive on a GC river. Probably A. E. Ethier was the Mr Ethier who about 1926 bought the equipment of a disused sawmill at McCrimmon and moved it to the Dalkeith area. A. E. Ethier also built and operated cheese factories. And he operated the Dalkeith Bakery, which he sold in 1928 or 1929 to his brother Albert Ethier, about the time at which he himself moved to Cornwall. He died in Cornwall. He was married, with children. Roman Catholic. ---- Private information * MacGillivray & Ross 463 * //Lochinvar to Skye// 256 [<6>]
