====== Jones, Samuel I. ====== 
 (died 6 June 1894, aged 73), newspaperman. Born in Worcester, Eng., Jones came to Canada at the age of 23. He worked on the Toronto //Globe//, edited //The Warder// in Dundas, founded the //Evening Post// in Ottawa, was for some ten years in charge of the reading room of the Canadian Senate, and founded T//he Advertiser// at Buckingham, Que. In the fall of 1893 he moved to Vankleek Hill, and there he founded //The Eastern Ontario Review// (first issue dated 15 Dec. 1893). In the first issue, he noted that “the ‘Macs’ have appropriated ‘The Hill’ as their peculiar heritage,” and asked for “a Highland welcome” for his newspaper. He had the only newspaper at Vankleek Hill, though an earlier paper, //The Economist//, had been in publication in 1858. Along with the //The Review//, Jones operated a book store and did job printing. By the following spring, he was seriously ill, and died at Vankleek Hill not much more than six months after he founded his newspaper. The newspaper, however, has continued to the present (now known simply as //The Review//; abbreviation //Vankleek Hill Review// used in notes to this dictionary). While not based in GC of course, it is one of the county’s institutions, providing valued news coverage especially for the north-east portion of the county. Jones’s obituary noted that he had been a personal friend of the celebrated Canadian newspaperman and statesman George Brown of the //Globe//. Editors following Jones at the //Review// were L. W. Shannon (4 years), H. Carl Jones (22 years; d. 2 March 1920, aged 46), W. J. Duncan (9 years), and Andrew Boyer.
