====== MacGregor, Katherine Jean ====== (5 Aug. 1866-16 Oct. 1953), nurse. (Kate MacGregor) Born at St. Elmo, GC. Parents: Mr and Mrs John MacGregor. She trained as a nurse in Columbus, Ohio, and at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago. She was superintendent of nurses at Murray Hospital in Butte, Montana, and at College Hospital in Santa Barbara, Calif. In WWI, she went overseas with the Canadian forces and was inducted into the British Army Nursing Service. She served as a war nurse in England, France and Malta. When the United States entered the war, she transferred to the American Red Cross and worked in American Army hospitals. She returned to Murray Hospital, Butte, after the war. Afterwards, she was appointed college and district nurse in Dillon, Mont., and served there in connection with Western Montana College of Education (now Western Montana College of the University of Montana) for 31 years. She is said to have retired “at the age of 83 after 66 years of active nursing.” Her last years were spent in Butte and in Helena, both in Montana. She died in Helena. Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery, Dillon, after Presbyterian and American Legion funeral services. She is believed to have been Montana’s first woman member of the American Legion.
