====== McBain, Georgiana or Georgina ====== (29 Aug. 1881-?), dentist, and her father **John McBain** (26 Feb. 1851-27 March 1916), physician. Georgiana, born presumably at Martintown, GC, began her dentistry practice c. 1907, in her father’s Montreal medical office, and she continued to practise after his death. Her name disappears from the Montreal directories by 1926. However, the files of the Ordre des dentistes du Québec record that she was a member of that organization from 1 Jan. 1903 till 1 Jan. 1932, the later date marking the end of her practice as a dentist, and that she was a graduate of what is now Bishop’s University. Georgiana followed a profession unusual for women at her time. For another woman dentist of GC origins, see [[munroe_margaret_ann|Margaret Ann Munroe]], who seems to have had a year or two of priority in beginning practice. Georgiana’s physician father John McBain was the brother of Andrew Richard McBain. He began practice at Martintown in 1874, just after graduating in medicine, and practised there for some years, but by the 1890s he was a physician in Montreal. In 1876 or 1877, Dr John McBain of Martintown was appointed an associate coroner for SDG. (//The Canadian Journal of Medical Science//, Jan. 1877, p. 38) He was a physician of Margaret Scott at the time of her miraculous recovery. (Toronto //Globe// 14 Nov. 1882) Rhodes Grant, who may not have known his Christian name, lists him simply as “McBane,” one of the 19th century Martintown doctors. Dr McBain was married to Isabel Munro of Quebec. ---- Rhodes Grant, i, 86 * Symington 101 * information from the researches of Mrs Donna Johnson * //Lovell’s Montreal Directory// for Dr McBain, second half of 1890s * information, April 2006, from files of Ordre des dentistes du Québec * birth at Martintown of a daughter to Dr McBain, //Witness// 22 Dec. 1879 [<6>]
