====== McCrimmon, Donald Alexander ====== (1836-2 March 1917), physician. (Donald A. McCrimmon) Born on his parents’ farm, on Lot 34 in the 8th Concession of Lochiel Township, GC. Parents: Alexander McCrimmon, a native of Scotland, and his wife Jane Ross. Alexander McCrimmon attended the local school and the Cornwall grammar school. In 1865 and 1866 he taught school at Lucknow in Bruce County, Ont. He studied medicine at McGill, graduating in 1869. Later, he took postgraduate training in Britain. He had his practice at Lucknow, and afterwards (from 1895) at Ripley, Ont. At Ripley he practised till shortly before his death. Active in Scottish affairs, he founded the Caledonian Society of Western Ontario in 1874 and headed it for many years. This society was involved in promoting the visit to Canada of Donald Dinnie. McCrimmon was a promoter also of the Sons of Scotland. Dr McCrimmon opened a drugstore at Ripley. His daughter Kate Helena Mary McCrimmon (Kate H. McCrimmon) was the pharmacist in the drugstore. The statement that she was the first woman pharmacist in Ontario is incorrect. However, among the students at the Ontario College of Pharmacy she was the first woman to take the degree (optional at the time) of Phm.B., awarded to her in 1902 by the University of Toronto. She was an honorary vice-president in the Ontario College of Pharmacy class of 1902. She continued her work in the drugstore after her father’s death. Later, she was a pharmacist in Philadelphia. Dr D. A. McCrimmon died at Ripley. He was married to Elizabeth Williamson, of Lucknow. (eight children) He was the brother of Angus McCrimmon.
