====== McDonell, James A. ====== (died 26 Sept. 1901), soldier. (sp. McDonald in his military file, McDonell in //Glengarry News//) It is not clear whether he was born in GC. He was a Detroit resident but had many GC relatives, among them Duncan A. Macdonald, the long-time postmaster of Alexandria. James A.’s father was John C. McDonell, who at some time prior to his son’s death had lived on Lot 30, 2nd Concession Kenyon Township, GC. James A. McDonell, enlisted since 1894, served in the U. S. forces in the Philippines War. At the time of his death he was a battalion sergeant-major (not as has been reported a captain) in “E” Company, No. 22 U. S. Infantry. He died at Arayat in the Philippines Islands, and is buried at San Isidro, also in the Philippines. His military record gives the cause of his death as “accidental poisoning.” The small but highly controversial war by the United States to suppress the Philippines insurrection of 1899-1902, fiercely fought on both sides, followed the Spanish-American War of 1898, and was contemporaneous with the Boer War, which was of so much interest to Canadians. Benjamin Craig, quartermaster sergeant, U. S. Cavalry, son of C. W. Craig of Summerstown, GC, was killed in the Philippines, 3 June 1899. (//GN// 4 Aug. 1899) Also, about these years, Donald F. McMillan, whose uncle lived at Dunvegan, GC, was on active service in the Philippines. ---- //Glengarry News// 13 Dec. 1901 * military record (incomplete?), U. S. A. National Archives [<6>]
