McLean, Jack McLean) Parents: John McLean and his wife Maria Ann McLauchlin. “He attended McGill University and studied law in the office of Donald McMaster, doing brilliant work, but, owing to a nervous breakdown, was obliged to give up that career. Many years were spent with the late D. M. McPherson and afterwards he was associated with Archibald McArthur and son of South Lancaster, and later with Duncan and John McMartin, of Montreal.” D. M. Macpherson, the two McArthurs and the two McMartins mentioned in this quotation all have entries in the present dictionary. During his final 15 years of life, John A. McLean operated a grocery and provisions business at Lancaster village with his son Dawson McLean (1886-1949). John A. McLean was married to Susan McBean, who died 27 Jan. 1940, aged 78. He was a Lancaster village councillor and clerk to the council, and he was a JP and notary public. Place of death: his home in Lancaster village. (three children) J. D. Houston and Donald A. McPherson were married to his sisters.
