====== Munro, Peter Fraser ====== (16 Jan. 1877-7 Jan. 1944), educator. (Peter F. Munro, P.F. Munro, Dr Munro) Born at Allan’s Corners (Allen’s Corners), Chateauguay, Que. Parents: Malcolm Munro and his wife Annie Fraser Munro (maiden surname presumably Fraser not Munro). He attended public and high school at Williamstown. After obtaining a B.A., Queen’s University, 1898, with specialization in classics, he returned to Queen’s for further study, 1903, obtaining first class honours in Latin. Also, he obtained his B.Paed. at University of Toronto, 1904, M.A. at Queen’s, 1905, and D.Paed. at University of Toronto, 1926. Except for a few months of teaching at Lancaster, in his younger days, his distinguished career in the teaching profession was outside GC. He was appointed to Jarvis Collegiate, Toronto, in 1907 as classics master, and taught there until 1913. In 1913 he was appointed to Riverdale Collegiate Institute, Toronto, as head of the classics department, and taught there until 1919. From 1919 to 1925 he was principal of Ryerson Public School, Toronto. According to one of his obituaries, Ryerson was at this time the largest school in Toronto. From 1925 he was a public school Inspector. From this position he resigned 30 June 1941 because of ill health. He was interested in sports, including lacrosse (which he played in his earlier years), and was a football coach at Jarvis Collegiate Institute. He is said to have been the founder of a system of school safety patrols, by which the older students helped the younger safely across the busy streets. Member of United Church. Mason. He was married to Mary C. Armour. (children surviving him: 3) His D.Paed. thesis was published by the University of Toronto Press in 1926 as //An Experimental Investigation of the Mentality of the Jew in Ryerson Public School Toronto// (pp. 55; probably issued only in soft cover edition). The word “mentality” in the title refers to intelligence as measured by tests, and to learning ability and to mental capacity in general. He writes in the Introduction, “This subject was first suggested by a member of the Faculty of the Ontario College of Education as one that could be easily dealt with in Ryerson School where the attendance is eighty per cent. Jewish. Besides, as there are seventeen hundred pupils in the school, a sufficient number of Jews would be available to make any conclusions arrived at quite reliable.” The publication, it should be added, is not in any way anti-semitic. He was probably the brother of Malcolm Fraser Munro. ---- Toronto //Telegram// 8 Jan. 1944 * Toronto Board of Education’s biog. fact sheet on Munro, dated 25 (Oct.?) 1944, in archives of Toronto Board of Education * information from Ontario Institute for Studies in Education * Fraser, //Gravestones//, II, 69, gravestone of his (parents?) at South Lancaster * Ross, //Lancaster//, 310, 338 *Anglin: group portrait of Glengarrians at Queen’s, 1896; biog. note) * wins gold medal in Greek at Queen’s, //Glengarry News// 28 April 1905 [<6>]
