====== Squire, Frederick W. ====== (died 7 Aug. 1935), clergyman. (F.W. Squire; middle name variously found as William, Willson, Wilsen, Wilson) No specific statement of his place or birth and parents has been found, but he had a brother, N. J. Squire of Carleton County, who was born at Hamilton, Ont., the son of Cincinatus and Mary Squire. F. W. Squire studied at Trinity College, Toronto (B.A. 1885). He was made a deacon 1881 and a priest 1882 in the Anglican Church. He held the position of missionary at Alexandria and at other stations on the Canada Atlantic Railway from 1889 to 1891. By Jan. of 1890 Anglican services were being held in Alexandria, with Squire as organizer, and it was thought the group would adopt the name of St. George’s. In fact, this early attempt to establish an Anglican congregation in GC proved unsuccessful, though within a decade, under the sponsorship of the McLennan family (see Mrs Duncan McLennan), the Anglican church of St. John the Evangelist was built on the Front of Lancaster Township. The difficulty facing establishing an Anglican congregation in GC was, simply, that GC had very few Anglicans. Squire served as a clergyman at various places in Canada, including Ottawa. He was living in London, Eng., by 1917, and in the 1920s. From 1928, he was vicar of Croxton in the diocese of Norwich, Eng. He died at Croxton Vicarage. ---- //Crockford’s Clerical Directory//, 1891, 1917 * //Glengarrian// 13 Dec. 1889, 3 & 17 Jan. & 9 May 1890 * information kindly supplied by: UTA; Archives of the Anglican Church of Canada; diocese of Ottawa of the Anglican Church of Canada; Incorporated Synod of the diocese of Ontario * Archives of Ontario-RRM: letter, Aug. 1890, about his building project at Casselman or Alexandria * MacGillivray & Ross 222-223 * Ross, //Lancaster//, 237 [<6>]
