====== Sutherland, Hugh Campbell ====== (1863-31 May 1938), clergyman. (H. C. Sutherland) Born at Embro, Ont. He attended Woodstock Collegiate Institute, taught primary and high school, graduated from McGill University in 1890, and from the Presbyterian College, Montreal, in 1892. He was a minister at Carman in Manitoba and Inverness and Kingsbury in Quebec, before coming to GC. There, he was inducted on 14 Dec. 1911 as the minister of the joint charge of two Presbyterian churches, Knox Church, Lancaster, and Hephzibah, Williamstown. As minister of this two-point charge, he lived at Knox Manse, Lancaster. He was one of the speakers at the 1912 centenary celebrations of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Williamstown. His son Lance Corporal Murray Campbell Sutherland (14 Oct. 1894-3 March 1916), a McGill University student who intended to become a missionary, was killed in the First World War. The Rev. H.C. Sutherland received the honorary degree of D.D. in 1920. A manuscript note on the Ontario Archives copy of the 19-page //History of Knox Church Lancaster, Ontario// (Alexandria, n.d, but about 1922) says that it was “Compiled by H.C. Sutherland.” At Church Union, Knox entered the United Church (as did the Rev. H.C. Sutherland), but Hephzibah continued to be Presbyterian. In July 1925, the Rev. H.C. Sutherland resigned from Knox Church and moved to L’Orignal. Thereafter, he organized what became known as the “Hawkesbury Charge,” from the United Church supporters at L’Orignal, Cassburn and Hawkesbury. In 1934, he retired from the full-time ministry. He died at his home in Richmond, Que. Deeply interested in natural history, he had a wide and accurate knowledge of the plants and animals of the various districts in which he lived. ---- United Church Archives: Biographical Files Collection; obituaries //The New Outlook//, 7 Oct. 1938, & Montreal-Ottawa Conference Minutes 1938 * MacMillan, //Kirk//, 62, 79-82 * H.
