Cameron, Alexander

(died Aug. 1921, aged 48), contractor. (Sandy Cameron) He had the contract in 1902 to build Duncan Donovan’s house. (Glengarry News 21 Feb. & 18 April 1902) In 1909, he was the successful tenderer for the building of the Roman Catholic chapel at Maxville. (GN 23 July 1909) He built the addition (before 1910?) to the east sacristy of St. Finnan’s to serve as a winter chapel. He got the contract in 1911 to build the House of Refuge in Cornwall, which was formally opened in Oct. 1913. (GN 26 May 1911, 19 April 1912, 24 Oct. 1913) In 1912 he had the contract for the separate school and the Catholic Order of Foresters Hall at Glen Nevis, and in 1913 he had the contract for a four-room addition to the Alexander School, at Alexandria. (GN 9 Aug. 1912, 28 Feb. 1913) Cameron also built the large and splendid Church of St. Catherine of Sienna at Greenfield. The cornerstone for the church was laid in June 1912 and the new church was blessed in Aug. 1913. (GN 7 July 1911, 19 April 1912, 14 June 1912, 15 Aug.1913) By January of 1914 Cameron had almost completed a house at Bainsville for D.D. McCuaig. In April 1916 Cameron, “the contractor for the Old Folks Home, at the athletic grounds, King street east,” was in Brockville examining the ground before beginning work. (GN 28 April 1916 reporting from the Brockville Recorder) In 1917 he contracted to build the new basement church of St. Anthony at Apple Hill, the previous temporary church having been destroyed by fire. St. Anthony’s Basement Church was blessed and opened for service in Oct. 1919. Angus H. McDonell called him “Alexandria and Glengarry’s noted contractor,” and remembered him driving “a team of horses hitched to a surrey” on family visits. (GN 2 Sept. 1987) Cameron was mayor of Alexandria 1911-1913, and he was reeve of Alexandria when he died.
