MacKenzie, Kenneth

(1791-19 July 1886), pioneer. (Major Kenneth MacKenzie) (date of birth is from gravestone; date of birth 1790 and age at death 96 & 99 also found) Born in Scotland. Alexander Mackenzie, the journalist, who visited him at his GC home in 1879, reported that he was a native of Contin, Rossshire, but grew up in Lochbroom, and that he had been a soldier in the British Army at the time of Napoleon’s imprisonment in Elba, and was very poor at the time he emigrated to Canada. MacKenzie came to Canada 1818. He settled at Glen Sandfield, GC, with Col. Valentine Chisholm and Daniel McDonald (Baker). Before settling in GC, he lived for some time with his uncle Hon. Roderick Mackenzie of Terrebonne, Que., a retired fur trader who was a first cousin of Sir Alexander Mackenzie. Kenneth MacKenzie served in the 3rd Regiment of the GC militia in the 1837 Rebellion, being at that time a captain. By occupation, he was a farmer. He died at Glen Sandfield. Presbyterian, and Presbyterian elder. He was married, probably in Lochiel Township, 10 Oct. 1825, to Catherine Fraser (1806-9 Oct. 1868). He was the grandfather of Mrs Justenia C. Sears, and a close relative, perhaps great-grandfather, of Major Henry J. MACRIMMON and Mrs C. A. Cattanach.
