Cresswell, David Thomas

(22 Aug. 1835-4 March 1918), longtime merchant of Martintown. (D.T. Cresswell, David T. Cresswell) Born in London, Eng. He came to Martintown, GC, as a youngster, and got experience in storekeeping by working as a store clerk there. In 1853 he opened his store in Martintown, and he operated the store till his death 65 years later. The store sold the wide variety of merchandise characteristic of country stores at the time and, as was the custom, Cresswell took farm produce in return. Rhodes Grant in his history of Martintown lists examples of the merchandise and the farm produce. Cresswell refused on principle to sell liquor. Providing a glimpse of the time and the place, and what was all too human there, the Martintown columnist in the Cornwall Freeholder of 13 Nov. 1885 wrote, “Mr. Cresswell doesn’t probably know that the roughs on his verandah insult ladies passing in and out of his shop. A visit to Cornwall gaol would improve the manners of these fellows.” Besides the store, Cresswell owned the flour and gristmill at Martintown. And although he gave them up as unprofitable, he at one stage owned an ashery and carding mill at Martintown. In his later years he had a farm and is said to have enjoyed operating it. According to Rhodes Grant, he grew to be the weathiest man in Martintown, and was the leading businessman in Martintown from 1853 till he died. The store was closed after his death. (four children) He was a Mason.

His wife, Elizabeth King (18 April 1836-13 Oct. 1918), was a native of Reading, Eng. She died in the same year as her husband. They are buried at the North Branch cemetery, near Martintown. Their son Charles William Cresswell (Willie Cresswell, C. W. Cresswell), described at the time of his death as “one of the best known men in Glengarry,” operated a general store in Apple Hill, and afterwards was a storekeeper and gristmill proprietor in Martintown, where he was born. He died at Martintown 24 Aug. 1946, aged 83. See also A. R. Foulds and MacPhadden family.
