Meloche, Arcade

(died 12 Sept. 1971, aged 94), butcher. Born presumably in Quebec province. When Arcade Meloche moved from St-Polycarpe, Que., to Alexandria, he was still learning English. On 5 May 1905, with George D. Sabourin, he began the business partnership of Meloche and Sabourin. (Glengarry News 12 May 1905) The Meloche and Sabourin butcher shop was for decades an Alexandria institution. (See George D. Sabourin for more on the history of the store) In 1948, Arcade Meloche and George D. Sabourin retired from the butcher shop in favour of their sons, Léo Meloche and Laurier Sabourin, but stated that they would continue to work as cattle drovers. (GN 16 Jan. 1948, Standard Freeholder 17 Jan. 1948) By 1997 (to take one year from its later history) the store was still operating, but it was mainly a small grocery store. In 2000, the two elderly partners (the Léo Meloche and Laurier Sabourin already named) and their wives closed it permanently. Arcade Meloche was married in 1901 to Marie Sabourin, the sister of J. G. Sabourin. She died 9 Oct. 1951, aged 71. Their son Leo William Meloche (the Léo Meloche mentioned above, as the new co-owner of 1948), after many years of work in the butcher business, died at Glengarry Memorial Hospital, 2 Oct. 2003, aged 82. He was married to Lorette Levac. (two children)
