Pendergast, James F.

(26 May 1921-5 Sept. 2000), archaeologist. (Jim Pendergast, Lt. Col. Pendergast) Born at Cornwall, Ont. Parents: Harold Pendergast and his wife Mary Evelyn Thompson. He attended primary and high school in Cornwall, and served in the Canadian Army in World War II. He made his first career in the Canadian Army, retiring as a lt.-col. in May 1972, and his second (and overlapping) career as an archaeologist. From 1972, he was assistant director of operations, National Museum of Man. Pendergast was the author of more than 60 publications on archaeological topics, published from 1962 onwards. GC was only a very small part of the large area he dealt with, but his attention to GC included writing about specific GC archaeological excavations sites (including the Sugarbush Site near Summerstown) and referring elsewhere in his publications to the evidence found at the GC sites. GC has had many historians, but it is not far from the truth to say that it has had only one archaeologist. Altogether, it may be said that he did an enormous amount to set the Indian pre-European archaeology of GC in its broad context of the Indian history and archaeology of Ontario and of the adjacent areas of the United States. He married Mary Margaret Denton on 21 Oct. 1944. (four children) In 1976 he received the honorary degree of D. Sc. from McGill in 1976. He was never a GC resident. His home was at Merrickville, Ont. Roman Catholic. Place of death: Smiths Falls North Unit Hospital. His publications relating to GC up to the mid-1990s are listed in Royce MacGillivray, Bibliography of Glengarry County (1996). He himself, on request, kindly prepared a basic list of titles for this purpose. See also G. N. Gogo.
