(19 Nov. 1892-29 July 1959), postmaster. Born in the area of Glen Nevis, GC. Parents: Noel Poirier and his wife Alvina Lacroix, who later lived at Fassifern, GC. During WWI, in which he joined the 74th Battalion, Royal Canadian Artillery, Procule Poirier served overseas and was wounded in action. He was postmaster of Alexandria for over 27 years, from 5 Feb. 1930 till 18 Nov. 1957, and was succeeded by Grace Cameron. He was Alexandria’s first French-Canadian postmaster and presumably its first postmaster fluent in French. For the context of his appointment, see Peter A. Ferguson. In WWII, while remaining as postmaster, Procule Poirier acted as quartermaster sergeant in “D” company, of the Reserve Battalion, based at the Alexandria Armouries, of the SDG Highlanders. In 1945 he was awarded the Canadian efficiency Medal “for efficient service over a lengthy period of years” in the militia. (Glengarry News 23 Feb. 1945) Poirier died at his home in Alexandria. He was married to Eva Cuerrier. He was survived by two sons; another son, Rolland, 9, died in a drowning accident in 1935. (GN 10 May 1935) Poirier was described at his death as having been active in the affairs of the Alexandria community for “some 40 years.” He was a member of the Sacré-Coeur parish.
