Calder, John A. G.

(died 9 June 1923), clergyman. He was the minister of Knox Presbyterian Church, Lancaster (inducted 28 May 1880, resignation accepted 1 Aug. 1894). He was highly active in the temperance cause, which had been taken up by so many of the progressive minded Glengarrians of his time. He published a long letter in the Glengarry Times (Lancaster ), 23 July 1881, denouncing the position of the editor, J. C. McNEIL, on temperance. At a meeting of the Glengarry Temperance Alliance in Alexandria, the Rev. J. A. G. Calder was in the chair. (Glengarrian 11 March 1887). G. H. McGillivray and M. R. McCuaig replied the same year to his criticisms regarding the enforcement of the Scott Act in GC, in a newspaper controversy that lasted some weeks. (Glengarrian May & June 1887) In an editorial article, the Glengarrian (Alexandria), 7 Oct. 1887, took issue with Calder, arguing that the Scott Act had been too extensively violated in GC to be regarded as a realistic anti-drinking measure, and actually harmed the important cause of temperance. In a letter to the same paper, 11 April 1890, Calder protested against the excessive number of drinking outlets. His position as minister of Knox Church is said to have been impaired in the last period of his pastorate by an unsustained accusation some members of the congregation brought against him in 1891. He died at Cowansville, Que.
