Emberg, Mattice

(died 9 Feb. 1947, aged 86), blacksmith. (Ty Emberg) Born at Moose Creek, Ont. Parents: Mattice Emberg and his wife Catherine MacPhee. He was a blacksmith at Glen Roy, GC, for some 60 years. In his earlier years, he did carriage-making as well as standard blacksmithing work. After the changes in society made carriage-making needless, he “shod horses, built and ironed sleighs, installed steel tires on carriage wheels and did many kinds of general repairs. ” He retired from his profession about 8 years before his death. In the spring of 1955, when his old blacksmith shop, which had also served for the carriage-making, was being demolished, it was noted that with his retirement “the era of blacksmithing at Glen Roy passed away forever.” (Glengarry News 5 May 1955) He was married to Elizabeth McDonald (3 Feb. 1871-18 July 1932), of Glen Roy. Mattice Emberg died at his home at Glen Roy. (children surviving him: 3) Roman Catholic. His son Donald (died 1983) married Kathleen A. Smith, sister of Bishop W.J. Smith.
