Fraser, Simon

(12 Aug. 1800-10 Dec. 1866), sheriff. Born in Scotland, perhaps at Stratherrick. He emigrated in 1824 to Canada , where he lived for three years at Williamstown, GC. He was sheriff of Carleton County, 1845-1866. There is an unsympathetic verse description of him in William Lett’s Recollections of Bytown and its Old Inhabitants (1874) p.10. It appears from Lett that Fraser, during his period as sheriff, was an extreme Tory. Fraser, who died at Ottawa, is buried in St. Andrew’s cemetery, Williamstown. (Above date of birth is from gravestone. Globe obituary says born 1798)
