George, Angus

(2 Feb. 1910-8 Jan. 1992), noted athlete. Born at St. Regis, on the Akwesasne Mohawk Indian Reserve. Parents: Jake George and his wife Susan Foote. In the 1920s Angus George and his family lived part-time in the Glen Nevis area of GC. He attended school at Glen Nevis. The family made baskets and axe-handles and sold them at places which included the Macdonell general store (see Angus A. Macdonell) at St. Raphael’s. At this time, also, Angus George was involved in bushwork and fishing and trapping. “He acquired and retained into old age a familiarity with the county, not just the highways and sideroads, but the creeks, forests and swamps, that few, native Glengarrians or others, could equal.” (Lanken) Angus George could remember walking from Glen Nevis to Hawkesbury to sell muskrat skins. He became one of North America’s ablest players of box lacrosse. In the early 1930s he belonged to the Cornwall Island Indians lacrosse team, which played in a league which included Alexandria. Lacrosse was a favourite sport at Alexandria at this time and was played at Chisholm Park, donated by A.M. Chisholm.

Afterwards, Angus George played professional box lacrosse in Syracuse, N.Y., Wilkes-Barre, the Vancouver area, and California, and with the Kahnawake-Akwesasne team of the Quebec League. After leaving professional sports he was a high steel construction worker on projects including the St. Lawrence Seaway. He retired at St. Regis, but kept up many contacts in GC. He died in the Hotel Dieu Hospital, Cornwall. He was married to Lilian Hemlock, granddaughter of one of the boatsmen of the Nile Expedition of 1884-1885. Angus George was a guest of honour at the Maxville Sports Banquet in 1990. He was inducted into the Glengarry Sports Hall of Fame in 1995.
