Grant, John R.

(died 22 June 1930, aged 81), contractor. Native of GC, probably born at Williamstown. Parents: Archibald Grant and his wife Ann McDonald. He was associated with his brothers Archibald Angus Grant and Lewis A. Grant in the Grant Bros. Construction Co. For the history of this firm, see Lewis A. Grant. John R. Grant’s work as a railway builder was in the American Southwest and in Mexico, where he took his part in constructing railways which included the Santa Fe and the Mexican Central. Like his two brothers already mentioned, he became a man of wealth. In 1920 he retired, and he died ten years later at his residence in Los Angeles. He was a Roman Catholic, and belonged to the Knights of Columbus. He is buried in Los Angeles. On 29 Sept. 1890, he was married at St. Columban’s, Cornwall, to Mary Janet McDougall. At the wedding the bride was attended by a sister of the contractor John D. Mcdonald, of Pueblo, Colo. There were no surviving children from the marriage. At the time of his death John R. Grant had three nieces living in Williamstown: Mrs A. Tupper Mcdonald, Miss A.B. McPherson, and Mrs J. Sullivan.
