Legault, Hugh A.

(19 Feb. 1871-23 July 1943), businessman. (Hughie Legault) Born at Moose Creek. Parents: Edward Legault and his wife Octave Laframboise. Hugh A. Legault lived for 32 years at Apple Hill, GC. An obituary (Standard Freeholder), dated at Apple Hill, stated, “He was in the cheese factory business for 28 years, having operated numerous factories in this vicinity. Some years ago he went into the machinery business and served the community well in this respect. In late years he was engaged in cutting up wood limits for fuel.” Another obituary (Glengarry News) clarifies the latter statements a little by saying that “he developed a large agency in machinery and in late years had operated as well, a fuel wood business.” Legault also owned a hall at Apple Hill (“in which there’s many a pleasant ball.”–Alex Lunny). The names of those attending the funeral show that Legault, praised in his obituaries as a likeable man and a useful citizen, was widely known and well connected. He died at the Hotel Dieu Hospital, Cornwall. Roman Catholic. (three children surviving him) He was married to Annie Parisien (1871-1939), of Cornwall.
