McCaffrey, James Patrick

(1895-29 Oct. 1966), sports manager. (Jim McCaffrey, James P. McCaffrey) Born in Alexandria, GC, in a family connected with the Alexandria DaPratos. McCaffrey, who lost his father when he was a small child, grew up in Alexandria and Ottawa. As he reached mature years, he played lacrosse and other sports in Alexandria and Ottawa. He was manager of the Ottawa Rough Riders football club for 36 years, beginning in 1923. A dynamic and successful manager, he turned an ailing club into a football success, overseeing a number of Grey Cup victories. His Glengarry News obituary notes that he “was the last of professional football’s part time managers,” and that when he retired in 1959 “from his post as registrar of trade marks in the federal government,” he turned down the offer of being made full-time manager of the Rough Riders. McCaffrey was president in 1955 of the Canadian Rugby Union, and held many other official positions in football organizations. Angus H. McDonell writes, “On October 29, 1966, Jim McCaffrey was accompanying the Rough Riders by train to Montreal. In the vicinity of Maxville he was stricken with a fatal heart attack. His body was removed from the train in Alexandria. Thus his life ended where it began, in Glengarry.” His wife had predeceased him in 1960. (one child) He has been inducted into the Glengarry Sports Hall of Fame.
