McDermid, John Edgar

(23 July 1892-17 Jan. 1975), lawyer. (Jack McDermid) Born Island Road, Martintown, probably on his parents’ farm in Cornwall Township, on the “Island” a few miles west of Martintown. (date of birth 1899 also found) Parents: Peter Hugh McDermid and his wife Anne Elizabeth Ross. He attended law school at the University of Saskatchewan, and was enrolled in Saskatchewan as a lawyer on 16 June 1916. In the First World War he served overseas in the Princess Patricia Light Infantry, rising to the rank of captain. After war service he returned to practice 3 Sept. 1918. He had a law practice in Saskatoon with his brother, Frederick Finlay McDermid. He was appointed K. C. on 12 May 1937. In the Second World War he rejoined the army and served in Canada, rising to the rank of colonel. He returned to the Saskatoon law firm after the war (18 Oct. 1945). When he retired not long before his death, he had been associated with the law firm for some 55 years. He died in Saskatoon. While overseas in the First World War, he married Marion Edith Henn, who was born in Chile. (four children) Her father, Sir Sydney Henn (1861-1936), was a Conservative MP in the British Parliament 1922-1929, and is said to have been British ambassador to Chile.
