McKercher, Robert D
(3 March 1874-21 Nov. 1951), police chief. Born at Tayside, Stormont County, not far west of GC. Parents: D. D. McKercher and his wife Annie Cameron (see Mrs D. D. McKercher). He was police chief of Duluth, Minn., from 1915 to 1919 (appointed 5 May 1915, resigned 5 Dec. 1918, served to Jan. 1919). Before joining the police force he was St. Louis County (Minn.) humane agent. After leaving the position of chief he was secretary to the Minnesota Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, was on the security force of a steel and wire company in Duluth, and operated a small grocery store, also in Duluth, then in his last years he operated a tourist camp (at which he then lived), in West Duluth. Married. (two children surviving him) His obituary noted that he “came to Duluth more than 50 years ago.”
