McLennan, John
(14 May 1789-27 Aug. 1866), prominent early citizen. (Squire McLennan, John (Squire) McLennan) Born at Kintail, Glenshiel, Scotland. Parents: Murdoch McLennan and his wife Christina. He came to Canada in 1802 with his parents in the Neptune. The family first settled in Quebec Province, but after the early death of Murdoch they moved to GC. John taught school in Williamstown in early life. He became a man of importance in the southern part of GC, holding various minor offices, working as a conveyancer, and establishing himself as a man of property on the shore Lake St. Francis east of Lancaster. Serving in the GC militia, he was a lieutenant in the War of 1812 and a captain in the 1837 Rebellion period. He is said to have broken his leg at the building of a barn, and to have been thereafter confined to a chair till he died. He was married three times: (1) to Margaret Mackenzie, who died in 1827, (2) to—, and (3) in 1830 to Catherine McRae. His children included Alexander (Squire) McLennan, Hugh McLennan the Montreal businessman, John McLennan the MP, and the wife of Roderick McLennan the surveyor.
