Rae, Ann Cuthbert

(1788-15 March 1860), poet, teacher. (Ann Cuthbert Knight, Mrs Ann Cuthbert Fleming) Born near Aberdeen, Scotland. She was the sister of John Rae the economist. Ann Cuthbert Rae married (1) James Innes Knight, and (2) James Fleming. She operated schools in Montreal, and was the author of early Canadian school textbooks. Place of death: Abbotsford, Que. She included a verse description of GC in her A Year in Canada, and Other Poems (Edinburgh, 1816). So far as is known, she was the first English language poet to write about GC. She was the mother of Robert Knight and the grandmother of Robert Skakel Knight.
