Ross, Herbert

(fl. 20th century ), dentist. Born in Martintown area, GC. He was registered on 23 May 1904 as a member of the College of Dental Surgeons of the North West Territories of Canada. This was the year before Alberta and Sask. were formed out of this territory. For some 20 years, Dr Ross practiced dentistry at North Battleford, Sask. In 1931-1932, returning perhaps from retirement, he was seeking to set up a dental practice in Alberta, probably at Rocky Mountain House. It is remembered that during WWI or II, probably the former, he was a dentist in Tierra del Fuego, employed by the British government. If this is so, it may be supposed to have been in connection with providing dental services to British seamen. Dr Ross died in Calgary. In his will he left a bequest to Char-Lan High School, Williamstown, to establish a scholarship fund in memory of his mother Elizabeth. In 1962, the bequest was reported to amount to $9700. (Glengarry News 8 March 1962) The first awards appear to have been made in 1963. In 1977 approximately $100 a year was available from the scholarship and the money was given at the rate of $100 each to six students going into higher education.

Surprisingly, considerable enquiry into the life of this interesting man has yielded little to fill out the details, and virtually nothing on his family origins.
