Roy, Jean-Baptiste

(1903-12 April 1949), merchant. (J.-B. Roy) Born at Glen Roy, GC. Parents: Jean-Baptiste Roy and his wife Marie Decoste. Jean-Baptiste Roy, the subject of the present entry, was the brother of Zo-Ann Roy, and was a lifelong resident of Glen Roy. Having bought the general store at Glen Roy in 1928, he conducted it till his death. In 1932 he was married to Hilda Carrière (d. 5 Dec. 1982). He was active in community and township affairs, and in French-language education, and in the organizations of St. Raphael’s parish. “In 1938 he had been responsible through canvassing and promotion for building of the Hydro power line to Glen Roy, and he had been instrumental too, in keeping the road open to winter traffic.” He was a director and ward chairman of the Glengarry Liberal Association. At his well attended funeral at St. Raphael’s church, local Liberal officials were prominent in the cortege and the guards of honour. Mackenzie King, then Liberal MP for GC, sent a message of sympathy. Jean-Baptiste Roy was fatally injured at his home when a circular saw he and an assistant were using to cut firewood shattered. He died that evening at the Hotel Dieu Hospital, Cornwall. The burial was at St. Raphael’s cemetery. (four children) In a second tragic event, his daughter Agathe Roy, a 14-year-old student at Alexandria High School, was killed in a car accident on 16 Feb. 1952. The students at the high school were taken to St. Raphael’s for her funeral.
