My first job took me all the way from the Eigg Road to Central in Lochiel to work for the Glengarry Telephone Company. This would have been in 1950 or 1951. During
for the Glengarry Telephone Company. This would have been in 1950 or 195 1. During my training period I stayed with John J. and Janet McCormick. Then I stayed at central.
Janet McCormick was well acquainted with my home road as she had taught at the Eigg school for a number of years before she got married. The school was in the field next to my home and Janet stayed with the Cuthberts when she worked there. The Cuthberts’ house was across the road from the school and Lizzie Cuthbert was Janet’s aunt. All this was before I was born, of course. The operators I worked with were Claire (Crevier) McGee and Georgette Paiment. Georgette was my teacher. After Basil McCormick asked me to write this I planned to get together with Claire to compare notes and see what we could remember together. Unfortunately Claire died before I got around to calling her. I didn’t work there very long because my father was getting sick and I had to go back home to help out. Because his asthma got worse we had to give up the farm within a year or so.
