MacEwen, Duncan MacRae

(8 June1898-30 March 1977), teacher. Born in the Maxville area, probably on his parents’ farm, which was on Lot 4, 7th Concession of Roxborough Township. Parents: John Fisher McEwen and his wife Ellen Flora MacRae. The parents left the Maxville area for Ottawa when Duncan was about ten years old, then after some five years in Ottawa they settled near Craik, Sask. (between Regina and Saskatoon). Duncan MacRae MacEwen received his B. Sc. degree from the University of Saskatchewan, at Saskatoon, 1922, and his A. M. from Columbia University, 1931. He received his Ph. D. from New York University, his thesis, done at the university’s School of Education, 1935, being entitled “The Function, Placement, and Content of Elementary Courses in Statistics in Colleges.” MacEwen taught mathematics as a tutor and then instructor at the City College of the City University of New York, and he taught also at the Townsend Harris Preparatory School of City College, but it has not been possible to outline properly his teaching career and to establish dates. Having retired in 1962, he settled in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He died in “a local hospital,” Colorado Springs area. It has not been possible to verify a report that a student helped to establish a foreign student aid fund in his memory at the University of Nebraska. Presbyterian. Mason. He was married to Gladys Stalker (d. 1988) (no children). He was the brother of Mrs James G. Gardiner. Through his aunt who married Duncan P. MacDougall, he was the first cousin of Frank MacDougall.
