MacLeod, Hamish Grant

(12 Nov. 1902-25 Dec. 1979), agricultural expert, businessman. (Hamish MacLeod, Hamish G. MacLeod) Born presumably on his parents’ farm, which was on West 1/2 of the Gore, in the 8th Concession of Caledonia Township, on the GC-Prescott boundary a mile west of McCrimmon. Parents: William A. (Willie Jim) MacLeod and his wife Anna Bella McCrimmon. Hamish MacLeod worked on the family farm in his earlier years, and went on the harvest excursions. He attended Kemptville Agricultural School 1931-1933, and OAC (i. e., the Ontario Agricultural College) at Guelph, graduating from the latter with his B. S. A. in 1937. From 1938 to 1943, he was ag rep for Grenville County, based at Kemptville. Afterwards, he worked for Dominion Concrete and, from 1944, for United Co-operatives of Ontario, based at Guelph. In 1948, his position was described as manager, Feed Division, United Farmers’ Co-operative Co., Ltd., Guelph. Later, he rose to be marketing division manager at the head office at Weston, Ont., of the Co-operatives, retiring in 1967. He was president of the Clan MacLeod Society of GC 1940-1942 (and was one of the speakers at the dedication of the MacLeod cairn west of Dalkeith in 1965), and active in many other organizations outside the GC-area, and he was a fund-raiser for the University of Guelph. On 12 Aug. 1938 he was married to Thelma Marguerite Weaver. (two children) Not strictly a Glengarrian, but coming from just outside the county, he was inevitably associated with it in name and in fact. One of the sketches of his life remarks that “With his death, many organizations lost their popular ‘Man from Glengarry.’” He was the uncle of Donaldson MacLeod, the co-author of the well-valued history Lochinvar to Skye.
