(18 Aug. 1869-19 June 1930), contractor. Born at Laggan, GC. Parents: Roderick McLennan and his wife, whose Christian name was Mary. If he and his brother Donald R. were full brothers, his mother’s surname was McGregor. He had a public school education, and trained as a carpenter in the Montreal area. Having gone to Saginaw, Mich., to work in 1888, he returned to Montreal, then was a contractor in Vancouver 1891-1892. He lived in Chicago, West Superior, Wisc., and the Nelson area of B. C. before spending “three years in the building and mining business” in the Yukon and Alaska, then spent two years in Seattle before returning to Vancouver in 1903, where he was a contractor and builder. The statement that he was appointed provincial clerk of public works in 1911 is certainly erroneous, the error arising probably from a different position he held, listed in a 1913 Vancouver directory as “wks clk Court House,” Vancouver. At Nanaimo, B. C., on 15 Feb. 1905, he was married to Grace D. McNeil, of B. C. He died suddenly at Powell River, B. C., where he had gone to attend a Masonic meeting. He was a “prominent” Mason, and a “life member” of the Alexandria Masonic lodge, as well as being a “well known Vancouver building contractor.” His brother Donald R. McLennan (b. 23 Aug. 1857; d. Vancouver 28 Dec. 1931, aged 74), in business in Vancouver from the late 19th century, was a hotel proprietor at Trout Lake and Chilliwack, B. C., and interested in real estate in Vancouver and Sask. They were the nephews of John McLennan, the B. C. pioneer.
