Ayre, William Burton
(4 July 1915-26 April 1996), physician. (Burt Ayre) Born in Durban, Man. He attended elementary and high school at Moose Jaw, Sask., and graduated in medicine, 1943, from the University of Alberta, and did postgraduate studies in internal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital, 1947. Dr Ayre practiced medicine in Montreal for many years, then about 20 years before his death he and his wife Amelia moved to Dunvegan, GC, where they rebuilt a log structure to be their home. Dr Ayre died at the Hotel Dieu Hospital, Cornwall, and is buried at the Dunvegan Cemetery. Dr Ayre was a book collector with a concentration on books by or about Thomas Carlyle. His large Carlyle collection was given to the University of Alberta two years after his death.
