Brodeur, Rosario
(1889-7 Feb. 1986), 4th bishop of the diocese of Alexandria. Born at Acton Vale, Que, but his family later lived in Connecticut. Parents: Hubert Brodeur and his wife Elisa Dion. Rosario Brodeur studied in Boston, Baltimore, and St. Hyacinthe, Que. He was ordained to the priesthood, 16 June 1916. He taught at the minor seminary in St. Boniface, Man., and was a parish priest at Sioux Lookout, Ont., and in Norwood, Man. He became coadjutor bishop of Alexandria, 1941, being consecrated bishop at St. Hyacinthe, 30 June 1941. On the death of Bishop Couturier of Alexandria on 27 July 1941 Fr Brodeur automatically became bishop of Alexandria. He served as bishop during the period when his diocese, hard hit by the Depression, experienced the upheaval and renewed economic activity of the war years, and the renewed (if limited) prosperity and the gales of change of the post-war years. Nevertheless, he accomplished many tasks of building, development and restoration during his period as bishop. His work included the creation of 9 new parishes and the building of Our Lady of Fatima Retreat Home in Alexandria and of the new Hotel Dieu Hospital in Cornwall. He attended Vatican Council II. He retired Oct. 1966. His retirement was spent in Alexandria and Cornwall, and he died in Hotel Dieu Hospital, Cornwall, aged 96. He was honorary president, Glengarry County Branch, Ontario Division, Canadian Red Cross Society, 1942-1944.
