Campbell, Angus B.

(1829-4 March 1904), blacksmith, foundry owner. Born at Loch Garry, GC, probably on Lot 26, 3rd Concession of Kenyon Township. Parents: Alexander Campbell and his wife Janet McInnes or McInnis. Angus B. Campbell came to Alexandria in 1854 and as a blacksmith began a partnership with another Campbell, Neil Campbell, of Fort Covington, N.Y., then after Neil Campbell returned to Fort Covington, Angus B. entered a partnership with G. H. Miller in a “foundry and blacksmithing business.” Later, Ogiste Charlebois became a partner, with the firm name being Miller, Campbell & Charlebois. In 1882 it was reported that Miller, Campbell & Charlebois were introducing an engine and boiler into their foundry “to take the place of water and mill power.” (Cornwall Freeholder 3 Nov. 1882) The foundry manufactured stoves, plows and other small items, and as we will see a little later, contributed to the work of at least one other Alexandria business. The firm has been described as ceasing operations on Campbell’s death, but the foundry part of it must in fact have done so a little before, for the Glengarry News Christmas number of 1903 stated, the Alexandria “firm of McPherson and Schell are… this fall… adding a new foundry to the[ir] already extensive plant. The latest addition is found necessary owing to the foundry of Miller, Campbell & Co. being closed, castings could be got only from Montreal or Ottawa, which entailed so heavy expense and delays that the new foundry became a necessity, especially as the machine shop business is fast increasing.” By this time, Charlebois was dead, and his name has evidently gone from the firm. Angus B. Campbell, who died at his home in Alexandria, was married to Janet McDonald or McDonell. He was a Roman Catholic. Their children included Mgr Duncan A. Campbell. Angus B. Campbell is decribed as being “of a quiet and unassuming nature.” He was a member of the township or village council.
