Campbell, Duncan Angus

(29 Aug. 1867-16 Sept. 1952), clergyman and educator. (Duncan A. Campbell, D.A. Campbell, Mgr Campbell) Born at Alexandria, GC. Parents: Angus B. Campbell and his wife Janet McDonald or McDonell. Educated: Alexandria separate school and high school, University of Ottawa (B.A.), and Ottawa Seminary. He was ordained priest in St. Finnan’s Cathedral, Alexandria, 2 July 1893. Having served as curate at St. Columban’s, Cornwall, when a young man, he was parish priest at St. Raphael’s for almost a half century, Oct. 1900 to Oct. 1948.While the priest at St. Raphael’s, he built up Iona Academy from a small country school to a major GC educational institution. He arranged to have the Sisters of Holy Cross operate the academy, and he used the old residence of Bishop Macdonell as part of the buildings. When fully established the academy offered secondary school courses and commercial courses. Fr Campbell supervised many changes in the structure of St. Raphael’s Church including the building of the Memorial Chapel in memory of Bishop Macdonell (d. 1840). For many years he secured money for the upkeep of the great church by lecturing and teaching in the U. S. (Villeneuve 161)

A man of no small importance and effect in the GC area, Fr Campbell was one of the first and the most active among his contemporaries in confronting the issues of Glengarrys growing social and economic backwardness relative to the rest of Canada. He also had to deal with the linguistic divisions of his parish. That he did not always do so to general satisfaction may be concluded from the fact that his francophone parishioners petitioned Bishop Couturier in 1931 and 1932 for a reform of Fr Campbell’s policies. He was given the title of Domestic Prelate and Monsignor, 1948. (Glengarry News 27 Aug. & 1 Oct. 1948, Standard Freeholder 20 Sept. 1948) Retired in his last years in Alexandria, he lived in his parents’ home. In 1956 his brothers and sisters placed a stained glass window in his memory in St. Raphael’s Church. (GN 19 July 1956) He is said to have prepared the 1896 Historical Sketch of St. Columban’s, Cornwall. He was a public speaker on various subjects including the British author and convert R. H. Benson (Cornwall Freeholder 18 Oct. 1923), Canadian and GC history (Cornwall Standard 25 July 1918) and Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park (Cornwall Standard 3 March 1932).
