Campbell, Robert M.
(9 Dec. 1867-11 Feb. 1936, aged 68), police surgeon. (Dr R. M. Campbell) Born near Laggan, on Lot 36, 6th Concession, Lochiel Township, GC. Parents: Donald Og Campbell and his wife Susan Campbell. He obtained a medical degree from the Denver College of Medicine (University of Denver Medical School) in 1893. The statement that he took his Denver medical degree in 1903 is evidently an error, unless he took a degree twice. He apparently had originally begun his medical studies at McGill, and he took post-graduate studies in medicine at McGill after getting a Denver medical degree. He may have practised medicine at his native Laggan in the 1890s. Dr Campbell was honoured at his residence at Laggan, 28 Feb. 1899, by his friends and neighbours on the occasion of his being about to leave for Denver, Colo. (Glengarry News 10 March 1899) When he was dying a Denver newspaper reported that he had travelled widely throughout the world and had been “a surgeon aboard a boat between Seattle and Alaska in the gold rush days” (presumably, therefore, somewhere in the period 1898-1906?). His home was in Denver from 1906 onwards. From about 1907, he was a relief or part time police surgeon in Denver, besides having his own medical practice, then was a full time Denver police surgeon from 1918 till his death. Till about a year before he died, he also maintained the private medical practice. Described at the time of his death as being a “veteran police surgeon” of Denver, Dr Campbell died at the Denver General Hospital a few days after being injured in a traffic accident on 7 Feb. while he was travelling to work in a taxi. He was a Mason. He had been married at Skye, Ont., on 22 March 1894 to Christy Chisholm. (two children) She was the sister of Roderick John Chisholm.
