Cattanach, Alexander John

(Sept. 1834-20 March 1890), lawyer, author. (Q. C. used after name) Born GC. Parents: Donald Cattanach and his wife Catherine McDonell McMillan. He attended GC schools, the University of Toronto (B.A.1856, M.A. 1858), and Osgoode Hall Law School; and he studied law also in the offices of R.P. and Adam Crooks. Called to the bar in 1859, Cattanach was a successful and well regarded lawyer. He was the law partner of Hon. Adam Crooks in Toronto till Crooks’ death, and was afterwards a member of the Toronto law firm of Kingsmill, Cattanach & Symons. According to Cattanach’s obituary in the Toronto Mail “Some years ago he contributed a series of articles on Canada to some of the English periodicals, which aroused great interest and were very highly spoken of in the reviews.” So far, research has not turned up the titles of any of these articles. It is probable, however, that they cannot be traced under his name, since articles in British periodicals at this time were often published anonymously. He was president of St. Andrew’s Society, Toronto, and president of the Toronto Branch of the Imperial Federation League. In his final illness he journeyed to England in the hope of improving his health by travel and of gaining the advice of doctors in England. He died at his home in Toronto. He was married to Miss McNutt, of Prince Edward Island. (three children)
