Clingen, Albert D.
(1880-1959), businessman. (Albert Clingen) Born at Martintown, GC. His father Matthew Clingen (c. 1850-Oct. 1931)was an undertaker and cabinet maker and operated the sawmill at Martintown which he bought from Harlaw G. Smith in 1901. (Glengarry News 13 Sept. 1901) The sawmill, which was Martintown’s principal employer, was destroyed by fire in 1915. The sawmill was not rebuilt, but Albert soon afterwards established himself in business at Apple Hill. At least a part of the business attraction of Apple Hill was that it had a railway station, which Martintown lacked. At Apple Hill, Albert operated a sash and door factory, and during the Depression he began a sawmill there as well. Also, at Apple Hill he made coffins and operated a funeral home. The Maxville funeral director Arnold Munro served his apprenticeship in the Clingen funeral home at Apple Hill. Albert’s son Lloyd was associated at one time with the Munro funeral home in Maxville. (GN 19 July 1962) Albert was elected trustee of the police village of Apple Hill. (GN 4 Jan. 1935) He died at Cornwall General Hospital. (four children) Albert Clingen was married (1) on 25 Dec. 1908, at Smiths Falls, Ont., to Effie Thursa Otto (1880-1947), (2) to Florence Blackwood (1879-1966).
Matthew Clingen and his son Albert Clingen belonged to the Plymouth Brethren religion. Matthew Clingen used to spend several weeks every summer in travelling in Eastern Ontario preaching and doing other evangelical work for the Plymouth Brethren.
