Edwards, George Norman

(16 July 1898-14 Aug. 1978), school inspector. (G. N. Edwards, George N. Edwards) Born at Brussels, Ont. He attended Stratford Collegiate, the University of Western Ontario (B.A.), and the University of Toronto (B. Paed.) He was inspector of public schools in the Glengarry-Prescott area (succeeding J. W. Crewson) and a resident of Alexandria from 1931 till 1937, when he was appointed inspector of schools in Stratford and Perth South, with headquarters at Stratford. (Glengarry News 11 Sept. 1931,13 Aug. 1937: arrives Alexandria, Stratford appointment) He retired as inspector in 1964. He was a Mason, and was the master of the Alexandria Masonic Lodge in 1937. He was the author of a number of English language textbooks widely used in Canadian schools. The titles are, or include (the order here is alphabetical): (1) Arithmetic Review and Practice Tests, (2) English Review and Practice Tests, (3) Let’s Enjoy Poetry: an Anthology of Children’s Verse, (4) Phonic Fun: a Workbook for Grade 1, (5) Reading through Phonics, and (6) Using Our Language: Grade 4. He died at his home in Stratford, Ont. (three children) He was married three times, to (1) Anna Gaffney, who died in childbirth, (2) Gladys Smith, of Greenbush, near Brockville, who died c. 1948; she was his wife when he was in Alexandria, and (3) Rosalind Hughes, of Wales, whose previous husband died in Burma in World War II. She died 1996. It must be assumed that she was the Rosalind Hughes Edwards who was the co-author of some of Edwards’ textbooks.
