Ferguson, Martin Cameron
(20 Dec. 1906-31 July1972), storekeeper. (Martin Ferguson, Martin C. Ferguson) Parents: Gordon Ferguson and his wife Catherine Anna Bella Cameron. (see Mrs Catherine A.B. C. Ferguson). Born at Dunvegan, GC. He farmed on the home farm at Dunvegan, then finding he had to give up farming for reasons of health, he was a storekeeper and postmaster at the village of Dunvegan for many years beginning in the spring of 1937. (Glengarry News 14 May 1937) Martin Ferguson was one of the founders of the Glengarry Historical Society and he was one of the directors when it received its charter in 1962. (GN 22 March 1962) He was also one of the founders of the Glengarry Pioneer Museum at Dunvegan. In 1965 he sold his store at Dunvegan to John S. Lowen (GN 8 April 1965), but he continued for a time as postmaster before moving to Ottawa. Martin Ferguson was noted as a perfomer of Scottish and old-time music. His sister Edith recalled in her essay “Recreation,” “He and I used to play for dances during summer months in the twenties and early thirties.” He made grandfather clocks and violins. He was married in 1932 to Olive May Hall, of Edwards, Ont. and of St. Elmo. (two children) She was a pianist and violinist, and gave violin lessons to local pupils. She died 16 Jan. 1998 at Maxville Manor.
