Goodman, Benton

(1875-1940) and his sons, cheesemakers. Benton (Ben) Goodman was a cheesemaker at Dalkeith and Laggan, in GC. He was married to Lillian Agnes Davidson (1879-1952 or 1956). (six sons) She became mentally ill and spent many years, up till her death, in the Brockville asylum. Ben Goodman was left to raise the children on his own. Heroically, he combined the tasks of feeding them, dressing them and getting them to school with the long hours of work required of a cheesemaker. In the winter, when the cheese factories were closed, he did bush work. He belonged to the United Church. The following four of his sons were also cheesemakers:

Clarence Winston Goodman (5 May 1904-7 Aug. 1967). (in Kemptville in later years, known as Shorty) Education: Laggan Public School and Alexandria High School; trained as cheesemaker at Dairy School, Kingston (qualified 1923). He was a cheesemaker at Lorne, Dalhousie Mills, Greenfield, Glen Norman, Finch, Goldfield and Goodstown. He worked for Kemptville Creameries 1943 to 1950 as a milk tester and in the making of powdered milk, and afterwards for Borden, Ltd., Kemptville, from 1950 to 1967 as a milk tester. Also, he worked briefly at Courtaulds, in Cornwall. He owned Lorne Cheese Factory, at Lorne in the 4th of Lochiel, which was operated by his brother Lorne and was destroyed by fire 7 July 1936. (Glengarry News 10 July 1936) He is said to have won a trophy as top cheesemaker in Ontario. He died at Kemptville District Hospital. He was married 25 Nov. 1940 to Jeanne D’Arc Lefebvre. (three children)

Herbert Goodman (died 1969). (Herbie Goodman) He was a cheesemaker at Laggan and at Quigley. In the winters he did bush work. He was married to Elsie Linsay. (two children)

Lorne James Goodman (1910-24 Nov. 1977). (Lorne Goodman) He worked as a cheesemaker at various places including Laggan and McCrimmon. Some of his work as a cheesemaker was with his father. In later years he was the caretaker of Kirk Hill United Church cemetery. He died in Cornwall General Hospital. Unmarried.

Tupper B. Goodman (13 Oct. 1914-22 Nov. 1984). (called Jack in army, and in his household, but known to the GC public as Tupper Goodman) Education: Big Beaver public school, Kenyon (grade school only). He served in WWII in Italy, North Africa and Belgium. As a serviceman he belonged to the British Columbia Dragoons 1941 to 1946. Tupper Goodman worked as a cheesemaker with his father and brother Herbert. Also, he worked at MacKinnon Industries in St. Catharines, and at East Side Dairy in Cornwall, and was a commissionaire in Ottawa. He died in Winchester Hospital. He was married 15 July 1947 to Marcella Pattyn, born in Belgium, whose family had settled in GC after WWII.

The Goodmans were remembered in the Laggan-Dalkeith communities as good neighbours, active contributors to neighbourhood activities, and as good conversationalists. Press references show that the cheesemakers of this family won many prizes for cheese at the Vankleek Hill Fair and other places of competition.
