Goulet, Jovenin

(died 13 Feb. 1951, aged 75), blacksmith, carriagemaker. (Joe Goulet) With his brother Theodule he operated a carriage shop in Alexandria, beginning in 1897. Before this, Jovenin had worked as a blacksmith at Munro and McIntosh. A photograph of about 1914 (printed Glengarry News 28 Dec.1994) shows the Goulet shop at the corner of Ottawa and Kenyon streets, Alexandria, with a sign reading “Goulet Bros Carriage Shop Repairing a Specialty.” This building was demolished in 1953. At some stage Jovenin bought his brother Theodule out of the business. Jovenin Goulet died suddenly in Alexandria, shortly after leaving his doctor’s office. Jovenin Goulet was married to Lea Secours, who was born at St. Isidore de Prescott. Their children included Mgr Albert Goulet (1902-1959), who was born in Alexandria and was a priest of the diocese of Alexandria, and two Sisters of Holy Cross, Sister Jeanne Goulet (23 Feb. 1913-5 Aug. 1993), born in Alexandria, a teacher for many years in Alexandria, Glen Nevis, Lancaster, Green Valley and elsewhere outside GC, and Sister Eva Giovanni (Sister Eva Goulet). Mrs Jovenin Goulet, who in her last months lived in Cornwall at the home of her son Mgr Goulet, died about Jan. 1956 aged 77 at Hotel Dieu Hospital, Cornwall. (twelve children).
