Greenspon, Lewis
(died 23 July 1948, aged 42), merchant. Born at Hawkesbury, Ont. Parents: Mr and Mrs Samuel Greenspon. Lewis Greenspon came from Hawkesbury to Alexandria, where he established his clothing store, “Alexandria Outfitters,” in the former D.E. Markson store, on Main Street. (Glengarry News 29 March 1935 ) An advertisement for Alexandria Outfitters a few weeks after WWII began (Glengarry News 6 Oct. 1939) stated that “Our store is at present filled to capacity with the largest stock we have ever had of merchandise all bought at pre-war prices. There will be no profiteering in this store and we are going to sell all this merchandise at THE OLD PRICE. Here is without doubt your unequalled opportunity to ‘Buy Now and Save’.” The advertisement noted that “We accept Wood and Eggs in Trade.” Clarence Ostrom recorded in a valuable description he wrote of the Alexandria businesses at the beginning of 1941, that at this time the Greenspons had stores in Hawkesbury and Drummondville, Que., as well as Alexandria. Lewis Greenspon took part in curling in Alexandria, and was a dedicated fisherman. By 1945, he had established the Greenspon Challenge Cup, still a feature of the GC sports scene, for local soccer. (GN 31 Aug. 1945)
Lewis Greenspon died suddenly of a heart seizure at his home in Alexandria. The Glengarry News obituary stated, “Deeply interested in the progress of Alexandria, and an active supporter of all forms of athletics, Mr. Greenspon was the type of citizen a town can ill afford to lose. Within the last few months he had been instrumental in bringing to Alexandria its latest industry, The Glengarry Dress Company, now in production in a section of the Alexandria Glove Works plant.” He was of the Jewish religion, and a Mason. He had served on the town council. Alexandria Outfitters continued to operate in Alexandria into the early 1960s. In 1964 the former Greenspon home in Alexandria was converted by Wilfred Marcoux into a funeral home. (Glengarry News 6 Aug. & 17 Sept. 1964 ) Lewis Greenspon was married to Florence Denenberg, who died at Jewish General Hospital, Montreal, on 4 Oct. 1992, aged 87. (two children)
